High Chelmer Multi-storey Car Park Update from Chelmsford Borough Council
Chelmsford Borough Council closed the multi-storey car park next to High Chelmer in March 2011 in order for essential maintenance work to be carried out. This work continues. We wish to make it clear, however, that High Chelmer is still open for business as usual. We are particularly concerned about the impact the multi-storey car park and its maintenance works have had on our retailers.
At the beginning of July the centre was enduring excessive noise levels and an increase in dust/debris drifting along Cornhill and into the centre's West Mall areas due to this maintenance work. Following talks between High Chelmer and the Council and their contractors, attempts are being made to minimise the disruption to this area of the centre and to make the environment much more tolerable for retailers and customers. The following actions are taking place:
- Panels of plywood are being fitted behind dust sheets and monoflex that already shroud the works in order to mitigate dust and noise nuisance.
- The possibility of working off peak hours on the lower north-east desk areas closest to Cornhill is being considered
- A programme/scope of works with regular updated progress reports will be circulated
